1. Essential oils- There are so many essential oils such as lavender oil, tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, clove oil, peppermint oil, etc.. All of them have proved to be very effective in removing head lice. But it is always better if you first check for allergies as your kid may be allergic to any of these essential oils.

What to do?

  • Take 20 to 25 drops of any of the above mentioned essential oil.
  • Mix 2 ounces of olive oil to it.
  • Apply this mixture on the scalp and hair evenly.
  • Leave it overnight.
  • In morning comb the hair.
  • Finally, shampoo your hair.
  • Repeat this again after a few days to completely eliminate the lice.

2. White Vinegar- White vinegar contains acetic acid that destroys the lice. Also, it is believed that the sticky glue that is produced by the female louse to attach itself to the hair is dissolved by the vinegar.

How to use?

  • Take equal quantity of white vinegar and water.
  • Apply this solution to the scalp and hair.
  • Wrap a towel around the hair.
  • Wait for two hours.
  • Now dip a comb in undiluted white vinegar.
  • Comb your hair for a few minutes.
  • This is followed by rinsing off your hair with diluted solution of white vinegar.
  • Finally, shampoo your hair

3. Garlic– The firm smell of garlic is hated by most of the insects, bugs, parasites and even lice. The fragrance of garlic causes the lice to  suffocate, and ultimately they are killed.

What to do?

  • Crush 10 to 12 garlic cloves to make a paste.
  • Add about one and a half tablespoons of lime juice to it.
  • Mix both the ingredients properly.
  • Apply this mixture on your scalp evenly.
  • Leave it for an hour.
  • Finally, rinse off your hair with hot water.
  • Repeat this daily for a few days.

4. Mayonnaise – Popularly used as salad dressing, mayonnaise can also be used for the treatment of lice. It is rich in trans-fats, that renders its viscosity properties. It causes the lice to suffocate and ultimately die.

How to use?

  • Apply mayonnaise over your scalp liberally.
  • Use a shower cap cover your hair.
  • You may also use a towel for this purpose.
  • Leave it for overnight.
  • Shampoo your hair in the morning.
  • By combing your hair, remaining lice are also removed out of it.
  • Repeat this every alternate day for a week.

5. Salt- Yes, even common salt is very effective in eradicating head lice by the process called as desiccation.

What to do?

  • Take a quarter cup of common salt.
  • Mix it with a quarter cup of white vinegar.
  • Pour this mixture in a hair spray bottle.
  • Gently spray this solution all over your hair.
  • Cover your head with a shower cap.
  • Wait for two hours.
  • Shampoo and condition the hair.
  • Repeat this every three days to get positive results.

6. Coconut oil– The fatty content in the coconut oil causes suffocation for the lice. Also, coconut oil makes it very tough for these parasites to maintain their grip on the hair follicles. Being effective lubricant coconut oil do not allow the adult lice to wander freely and also restricts their growth.

How to use?

  • Rinse off your hair with apple cider vinegar.
  • Let your hair dry.
  • Apply coconut oil to your hair and scalp properly.
  • Cover your head with a shower cap.
  • Leave it overnight.
  • In the morning, comb your hair.
  • Shampoo your hair as usual.
  • Repeat this daily for a week or so.

7. Sesame Oil – Sesame oil being sticky and thick restricts the movement of roaming lice and inhibits their growth. Also, sesame oil has insecticidal properties that kill the lice. The best part is being natural, it is not only safe but also promotes the hair growth.

How to use?

  • Apply sesame oil on your scalp evenly
  • Cover your head with a shower cap
  • Leave overnight
  • In the morning comb your hair
  • This is followed by shampooing your hair as usual
  • Repeat this 3 times in a week
